Compatibility

Q: Is the GeSWall compatible with other firewall programs, such as Sygate or Windows Firewall?
A: Yes, GeSWall must not interfere with other security products including firewalls. That is because it works differently. Though it detects network traffic, it doesn't block it. Instead GeSWall isolates potentially vulnerable or malicious software from the rest of system preventing damage and information leaks.

Q: Why I can't save my Thunderbird database on my USB Pen Drive?
A: Perhaps your pen drive has FAT file system. By default all files on FAT believed to be trusted.
Whenever Thunderbird wrote a file GeSWall redirected an access and created virtual copies.
When an isolated application terminates all redirected files are erased as well.
By this way you probably lost the _changes_ - new mail, but previous state has to be untouched.
Actually GeSWall doesn't work correctly with applications on FAT (FAT32). The fix is scheduled for next release of GeSWall.

Q: Is there way to isolate programs in USB disks, or in LAN drives, to start isolated?
A: You can create a resource definition which will specify all files from particular device(s) as "threat point", which means GeSWall will ask isolation or isolate automatically. For example, in case of network shares use the steps:

  1. open GeSWall Console
  2. click "on Resources" folder
  3. right mouse click
  4. select "New/Add Resource..."

  5. set "Security Class" to "Threat Gates"
  6. set "Resource Type" to File
  7. select "Name" radio button
  8. in "Resource" box type: \Device\LanmanRedirector
  9. press OK button
